Ruth Skit: Boaz and Workers in the Field

Ruth Skit: Boaz and Workers in the Field

Roles: Workers 1-6, Boaz, Ruth (optional, non speaking, works in the field)

Worker 1: Ugh, another hot day of harvesting in the sun!

Worker 2: Sure is hard work getting all this barley in.

Worker 3: At least there is a really good harvest this year.

Worker 4: Yes, there will be a lot of money to be made for us and our hard work.

Worker 5: Let’s just get this field all done.

Worker 6: Wait, who’s that lady over on the side of the field?

1: That’s one of the gleaners.

2: Yeah- the losers who don’t have real jobs like us.

3: They have to pick up the leftovers from what we harvest.

4: It’s the only way they get anything to eat.

5: Yeah- we have to leave some extra for them- it’s the law.

6: Kind of annoying- that she benefits from our hard work, though, you know?

1: She’s not even from here.

2: Those Moabites are bad news. I heard they are really mean!

3: Maybe we should make her leave.

4: You mean just mess with her a little bit? Yeah- haha!

5: And let’s not leave so much left over from these sheaves- make her job harder

6: That will teach her to come to OUR field and think she’s owed anything!

Boaz: Hey, everyone!

All workers: Hello, Boaz, sir!

Boaz: I wanted to let you all know- there is a woman gleaning in the field today.

1: Yes sir, we saw her.

Boaz: Great! Please be kind to her! Make sure she gets water at breaks, and make sure nobody messes with her. I know sometimes field hands like to joke around- but can you keep an eye out to make sure she’s safe?

2: Uhhh, yeah, definitely!

3: We would NEVER do anything to make her feel like she didn’t belong here.

4: Yeah, we think it’s GREAT that gleaners are safe here.

5: Maybe we should even leave out EXTRA barley from the sheaves for her.

Boaz: What a great idea, yes, please do that!

6: May I ask, sir, why you are going out of your way to be so nice to this foreign woman?

Boaz: Well, she moved here with Naomi, who is a relative of mine.

1: Oh, so she’s related to you?

2: I guess that makes sense! She’s not actually foreign?

Boaz: Ruth IS from Moab, she just came back here with Naomi when their husbands both died.

3: Oh geez, that’s super sad!

4: Yeah, widows have a tough life- but two widows trying to support each other- that’s really tough.

Boaz: Yes, indeed. And Ruth has gone out of her way to help Naomi. She’s here gleaning in the field- hard and tiring work, as you know. She’s very faithful to Naomi, so I thought we could help her as well.

5: Sounds like maybe you have a crush on her, Boaz!

6: Ooh, Boaz and Ruth, sitting in a tree! First comes love, then comes marriage…

Boaz: Actually, I am the next of kin for Ruth. Maybe I *should* marry her…

1: We were just kidding, Boaz…

Boaz: Well, I wasn’t! God has called us to love our neighbors. And you get to do that by watching out for Ruth in this field. I get to do that by giving her a future, and a place to belong. God has been faithful to us. I respond out of thanks by sharing that gift with others.

2: You’re a good dude, Boaz!

3: And we will be like you- do our best to help and protect Ruth.

4: And anyone else who comes to this field to glean!

5: Yeah! We will have enough- we might as well share with people who don’t have enough!

6: Exactly! We have enough to share. Now- Enough yapping- let’s get this field harvested!

All: Thanks be to God!
